It was another evening on which the weather held fine enough to see the athletes and fun runners through and home from the second of the trinity of 5K road races hosted by An Ríocht AC. on Wednesday night.

Intriguingly, the first five home on Wednesday night’s installment matched that of the first leg on September 7th. In different positions maybe but it’s all eyes on the final leg now on Wednesday 21st.

There is the possibility of a showdown between the most recent winner, Seán O’Sullivan and his An Ríocht clubmate, Tommy O’Brien – who won that September 7th race.

That looks likely unless someone from the field or someone else from that famous five will step up and claim the third stage win for themselves. Then it will be all about timing to sort out to overall winner.

Talking Point

An outstanding talking point among people who know their athletics are the performances of An Ríocht AC athlete, Shona Heaslip in the two races to date. She finished in fourth place on Wednesday night and only 14 seconds behind the winner.

Yes there are medals for all participants and a specially commissioned Buff – a most stylish and versatile form of headwear and suitable for all types of weather. And there will be a party to celebrate all the achievements in the fading light of the autumn evening.

That’s on Wednesday, September 21st at 7pm.

Return of Couch-to-5K

And the Couch to 5K production line / conveyor belt just keeps on going. On Tuesday night 166 returnees and newcomers turned up for the new Couch-to-5K season.

Already there’s a Halloween Family Party being planned for the track for Thursday night October 27th with a Spook-to-5K fun run and frightening frolics around the flood lit tracks.

The safety of the surroundings and car parking facilities lends itself easily to family occasions. Moms, dads and children of all fun-loving ages are being invited to dress up in frighteningly frightful gear and join the party. In the meantime, let’s have a look at the results from Wednesday night’s 5K:

U-16 County Championship Semi-Final: Castleisland District 2-16 Kenmare District 1-13.

Report: Jimmy O’Sullivan Darcy
Despite a strong wind and inclement weather, Castleisland and Kenmare served up an absolute thriller of a County U-16 semi-final.

In the end, Castleisland had a bit to spare, but it was only in the last ten minutes that they finally were able to shake a determined Kenmare off.

There was very little between the sides throughout. Man of the match Eddie Horan and Sean O’Connell gave them a grip on midfield but Kenmare’s defence was outstanding and they moved the ball at speed.
Donal O’Sullivan scored two Kenmare frees and picked the otherwise excellent Luka Brosnan’s pocket for a point but Castleisland had points from Paul and John Walsh and Sean Horan to match them.

Another O’Sullivan free was countered from play by Eddie Horan and he and Luka Brosnan put Castleisland ahead by 0-6 to 0-4.

Back again came the momentum, with O’Sullivan (f), Colin Crowley, and an impressive Daniel Casey putting Kenmare ahead by 0-7 to 0-6 at the break.

A goal-bound rocket by Colin Crowley rattled the Castleisland post on the restart before Eddie Horan and Donal O’Sullivan swapped scores.

Horan was simply majestic and Castleisland should have picked off further scores before the big man set up Donal Geaney for a goal.
Donal O’Sullivan pulled a point back but two frees by Eddie Horan made it 1-9 to 0-9. Shay Walsh stretched the lead but Kenmare replied. Suddenly the game sprang back into high drama as O’Sullivan blasted to the net.

A defender kicked it away, but it was too late as the leather had crossed the goal-line and it was back to all square.
Not for long. Eddie Horan picked off four points (3f) and Paul Walsh another, while Daniel Casey kicked a last Kenmare free. With pretty much the last move of the game, the peerless Eddie Horan slotted to the net for a clinching goal. Well done to two great teams and excellent referee Paul Hayes.

Kilcummin Prevail Over Milltown/Castlemaine In Play-Off

Deirdre O’Sullivan, Miltown/ Castlemaine PRO.

Kilcummin preserved their senior championship status with a three points victory over our own club, Milltown/Castlemaine in the Senior County Championship Relegation Play-off in Castleisland on Sunday afternoon.
Milltown/Castlemaine was very unfortunate to lose Donal Dennehy to injury in the 14th minute. Donal had just scored his side’s first point before he landed awkwardly on his left elbow-sustaining a fracture.
Later in the second half, Paul Carroll had to be replaced after picking up an ankle injury. We wish them both a full and speedy recovery.
Well done to the entire panel as they fought right to the end and to Mike Hickey, Mike Carroll and Timmy Teahan for their commitment and enthusiasm with this team.

Lee Strand U16 County Final: Castleisland 4-4 Mid Kerry 1-2

Two years ago at U-14 Castleisland narrowly prevailed against the same opposition in one of the best county finals I have ever seen. It was a little more comfortable for the champions on this occasion, the physical disparity having grown if anything in the interim.

The tone was set early on as Sean Horan was pulled down in the square, with Paul Walsh confidently blasting home the penalty before adding a point shortly afterwards.

Shane Doona opened Mid Kerry’s account, but they were labouring at midfield against the outstanding Eddie Horan and Sean O’Connell. Eddie scored 1-10 in the semi-final and soon took off where he had left off, notching three excellent points, one a beautifully curved over ’45.

Massed Defence

At half-time Castleisland led by 1-4 to 0-1, with Mid Kerry struggling to penetrate a massed defence well marshalled by Luka Brosnan and Ryan Maguire, despite the best efforts from an always lively Daire Cleary.

Sean Brosnan cleverly set up Eddie Horan for a smashing goal on the restart. Roan Moriarty raised a green flag for Mid Kerry and a Mark O’Connor point gave them hope at 2-4 to 1-2, but Eddie Horan with another goal widened the daylight between them.

Net Bulged

Before the finish, Sean Horan was again fouled in the square and this time it was Shay Walsh who stepped up to the spot-kick, with the exact same result as the net bulged for a fourth time.

Coiste na nOg Chairman Tom Keane presented the Cup to Castleisland captain, Eddie Horan.

A well-attended game was helped by strong and sensible refereeing from Seamus Mulvihill.

The Con Courtney Memorial Cup

The cup these fine young men brought home on Sunday afternoon came into being in memory of the late Con Courtney of Ballymacadam.

Con, who died in February 2006, was a bread delivery van driver for years for Nelligan’s Bakery.

In the evenings and on Sundays he and his work colleague, Timmy O’Connor strapped on their Kerry County Board ‘gate bags’ and you could meet them at the gaps or gates at football and hurling matches anywhere in the county.

The academy for our U10 panel didn’t take place last Sunday morning the 16th of October due to the inclement weather on the morning. The final academy of the year takes place next Sunday the 23rd of October. Throughout the season the lads have played some great football and have developed their skills. Well done to all involved with the squad on a very successful year.

Faoi 8

Last Sunday morning the academy was cancelled due to the weather with the final academy session of the season will take place next Sunday the 23rd of October. The Siobhan Cotter Blitz took place on Sunday morning the 09th of October in Churchill. Our U8 and U7 teams were competing on the day and we had a great turn out for the U7 boys in the October sunshine. In our first game we were up against a strong Austin Stacks side. The lads played brilliantly as a team and a cracker of a goal from the boot of Jack Collins got us off the mark. Goalkeeper Seadhna O’ Brien was kept on his toes by the sharp Stacks forwards. More goals from Ryan Burke and Darragh McMahon saw the lads earn a well-deserved win. Next up was Churchill who scored 2 early goals and although everybody tried their best we couldn’t close the gap and the home side ran out eventual winners. In our last game we had Ardfert and some brilliant team work and passing saw us run out eventual winners in a close contest. Well done to all the team, mentors, and families who supported the teams on the day.

The final academy for the U6 Academy Boys & Girls will take place next Sunday the 23rd of October on the main pitch so come along and bring your water and gum shield.

Cailini Faoi 14

Our U14 Ladies Blue team took on Castleisland Desmond’s in the final group game of the North Kerry League Division One campaign. Although neither team were in contention of winning the competition both teams played this game with a high level of intensity.

Earlier in the year when the teams met in the county league Ballymac suffered a heavy defeat mainly due to injuries as both teams fully fit are very well matched.Friday night it was Ballymac’s turn to have an almost fully fit squad although Roisin Long remains on the injury list.

Dragged Down

Ballymac opened the scoring with Cora Savage pointing from outside the box. Full forward Lisa Curran quickly followed up with another point from play before Cora tapped over a close in free when Aisling O’Connell was dragged down on route to goal. There was no stopping Kate O’ Connor’s Goal bound effort moments later. Cora Savage again tapped over another free, followed by a netbusting goal from the boot of Emily O’Donoghue after she side stepped a couple of defenders. Cora Savage again tapped over a point from play and she was becoming a real thorn in the Desmonds side. Castleisland got off the mark with two well worked points from play and this was followed with a very fortuitous goal moments later.

Hunger for Scores

This was to complete Castleisland’s a scoring for the half however Ballymac tagged on three more points from the boots of Cora Savage, Lisa Curran and Kate O’Connor.

Ballymac started the second half with as much hunger for scores as they finished the first, from the restart Cora Savage and Lisa Curran quickly pointed. The Ballymac rearguard was playing with real efficiency recycling every defence into attack, this was reflected by the fact that they conceded but a solitary score a goal in the dying minutes of the second half. At the other end of the pitch the forwards were scoring quiet fluidly with two goals from Cora Savage and a point a piece from Lisa Curran, Kate O Connor Ellie McElligott & Emily O Donoghue.  The final score read 5:13 Ballymac to 2:02 Castleisland Desmonds.

Three in a Row.

The result throws up a plate final to be contested in a couple of weeks time between the teams. Having beaten this Castleisland team in the past two years first in an U-12 final and the following year in an U-13 final Ballymac will be hoping to make it three in a row. Details of the final will be communicated when we know them but it certainly would be one to put in your diary as they have not disappointed in the past and support is the 16th man.

The Ballymac team on Friday night was as follows: Ellie Sugrue, Sophie O’Donoghue, Caoimhe O’ Carroll, Aoife Galvin, Emily O’Brien, Eve Creedon, Cathy Palmer, Aisling O’Connell, Sinead McKeown, Ellie McElligott, Emily O’Donoghue, Cait Rice, Kate O’Connor, Lisa Curran, Cora Savage, Holly Geary, Mary Ann Fleming and Ellie Lenihan.

Scorers :  Cora Savage, 3-05; Lisa Curran, 0-04; Kate O’Connor, 1-02; Emily O’Donoghue, 1-01 and Ellie McElligott, 0-01.

Cailini Faoi 12 Year Review

The girls were placed in Division 1 of the North Kerry League for 2016. They began in early March with with a victory away to Castleisland Desmonds followed by defeat in Abbeydorney. A defeat to Austin Stacks away was followed by victory in the final group game at home to Listowel. This left the girls in the Division 1 Shield final versus Austin Stacks. The county league prelim rounds began in early April. The girls had wins over Legion, Scartaglin and Southern Gaels and defeats to Beaufort and Cromane. Following these results the girls were placed in Division 2 of the County League proper. This was a big step up for the girls but they rose to the challenge really well. They began with a great victory over Beaufort at home, then lost out to Firies following a great battle. The girls got back on track with wins over Corca Dhuine, Dr. Crokes and Beale/Ballyduff. These results meant a home semi final against Beaufort. This was always going to be a huge battle after a loss and a win against them already. What a game it turned out to be and after an incredible performance full of heart and spirit Ballymac won on a scoreline of 1-09 to 1-02. The final was against local rivals Firies. Following a long delay the game was played on 26th July (5 weeks after the semi final) in Connolly Park Tralee. The game was played on probably the worst day of the year with driving wind and rain. Firies got of to much the better start and were ahead by 12 points at half time. To Ballymac’s credit they gave it everything in the second half to eventually lose on a scoreline of Firies 4-04 to Ballymac 2-05. There was then a 2 month delay to the final of the North Kerry League. The girls played Stacks and were beaten by a very strong team who had barely lost the Div. 1 county league final a few days earlier.

So, to sum up, the loss of two finals was very disappointing but when one considers that it was North Kerry Div 1 and County League Div 2 it was a fantastic achievement. These girls are the first team in the Ballymac ladies club history to appear in a Division 2 final. The team coaches Siobhan, Anthony, Ger and Mike are so proud of this wonderful bunch of girls and the future is very bright for the club going forward.

U12 Panel 2016: Cathy Palmer, Bridget Sheehan, Emma Leen, Alyssa Leen, Eimear Curran, Lorna Daly, Grainne Galvin, Yvonne Hurley, Shona Griffin, Ciara Palmer, Ella Quirke, Roisin Raggett, Roisin Rahilly, Abbey Leahy, Niamh Lynch, Kerry Hennessy, Orla O Connor, Rachel Griffin, Kate Collins, Alexa Weiss, Rachel Creedon, Alli Tarrant, Kate Feeney, Charlotte Geary.

Corca Dhuibhne Pip Desmonds Ladies by a Point

Despite an outstanding performance the Desmonds U-14 girls went down by a single point to Corca Dhuibhne in the North Kerry league division 1 on a scoreline of 1-14 to 3-9.

In truth Desmonds played the better football throughout the hour but their failure to take five, clear cut goal chances would ultimately cost them in the finish.

Desmonds have now lost two games by a single point and one by two points. So, with a bit of luck they could be higher up the league table.

Twenty three players togged out for Desmonds and every one of them saw game time so the future is bright for this dedicated bunch of players. Desmonds Abú !

Cailini Faoi 14 Gold Team

North Kerry League Division 3 Shield Final. The Ballymac Gold under 14 girls proved too strong for a very determined Dingle team in Ballymac on Sunday last. Only for some excellent defending throughout the game the result could have been closer. In the end we ran out winners 1-6 to 1-0 but not until the finishing stages could the girls relax and be sure of victory. The first half saw both defences on top for most parts until full forward Jade O’Riordan scored a great goal after an excellent kick passing move. Shortly after Jade followed up with another point to leave it 1-1 to 0-0. Just before halftime Kate O’Connor scored our second point to leave the halftime score 1-2 to 0-0 . Dingle came into the game stronger at the start of the second half but some poor shooting didn’t help their cause although they did score a goal midway through the first half which turned out to be their only score in the game. The girls finished the game very strong with points from Laura Dunne, Kate O’Connor, Ellie Mac Elligott and Mary Anne Fleming to leave the final score 1-6 to 1-0. On the day our defence was excellent with Sophie, Aoife, Mille and especially Emily O’Brien at centre back keeping the Dingle girls at bay. Ellie McElligott and Kate O’Connor complimented each other very well in mid field covering all parts of the field and up front we had Mary Ann, Laura  and Jade leading the way. Captain Jade O’Riordan accepted the shield from Frank Mc Loughlin on behalf of the North Kerry Board. Special thanks to Dingle for a very sporting game, and for making the trip to Ballymac.
Panel: Ellie Sugrue, Sophie O’Donoghue, Aoife Galvin, Ellie Linehan, Emily O’Brien,  Millie Dunne , Ellie McElligott, Kate O’Connor, Laura Dunne, Mary Ann Fleming, Holly Geary, Precious O’Shea , Jade O’Riordan, Cathy Palmer, Aylssa Leen, Lorna Daly, Grainne Galvin.

Cailini Faoi 14 – Review

The Ladies u14 team will look back on 2016 as a year of real success. Boasting a panel of 27 players this group of players has grown from strength to strength.
A victim of previous teams successes the team was thrown in at the deep end, Division 2 of the County league and competed against the following teams Austin stacks, Castleisland Desmonds, Fossa, Na Gaeil, Legion and Scartaglin. It proved a very competitive Division and points were hard earned.  Ballymac, due to these girls efforts have established themselves as worthy competitors in this division & although no medals came our way this year the team gained a foothold in the division and will be hoping to use their experience to propel themselves onto greater heights next year.
The standout success of the year was Aisling O’ Connell playing her way onto the County panel, Aisling was a joy to support in her efforts reaching The All Ireland final in Nenagh where Kerry just came up short on the day. Aisling has instilled a belief to her fellow club members that hard work & commitment pays off.
Hosting the Féile
Hosting Feile, the girls did their club proud off the field and forged some lifelong friendships and showcased Ballymac hospitality at its finest. On the field of play the girls were magnificent, they battled hard and played their way to a division two semi final just coming up short to a Fethard team boasting three County players. It was a bitter sweet moment, watching a team we drew with in the first game and were only beaten by in the dying moments of the second game, pick up the Silverware, but the girls took all of the positives from the experience.
North Kerry League.
If nothing else the county league and Feile offered up a dilemma that was taken on board by management and quickly addressed. With a panel of 27 players it was obvious to parents and mentors there was going to be a major difficulty to offer sufficient game time to everyone. A decision was taken to enter two North Kerry league teams. The Blue Team would compete in Division 1 and the Gold Team in Division 3 with a couple of girls overlapping to compete in both. The Success of this can be seen with the Gold team contesting a Shield Final against Dingle in the coming weeks followed by the Blue team competing in a Plate Final against Castleisland Desmonds.
Mentors
The management team saw Kieran Savage and Kieran O’ Connor come from the previous years U-12 side and John McKeown returned to the ranks previously coaching in the boys section. Ballymac welcomed newcomer Linda Gleeson to the club and she was made very welcome by all in the club and quickly immersed herself in the job to hand.

Injuries
To say the team had injuries would be an understatement and to date I don’t think a single game was played with a fully fit panel, however replacements were there in abundance and everyone seized their opportunity when it was presented.
The girls themselves are a pleasure to work with and are a credit to their parents, club and county.  We saw a lot of new faces in 2016 and here’s to hoping the new player trend continues.

In the wake of a series of weather forced postponements reaching back to early September, the Dick Fitzgerald Memorial Cup was eventually played for over the October bank holiday weekend.

Castleisland Golf Club hosted the event in ideal weather conditions.

“This tournament was originally to be played in September, but it was rained off on two occasions,” club captain, John Manton explained.

Eventually Completed

“The organising committee was pleased that the tournament in memory of the very popular Castleisland native, Dick Fitzgerald of the Woodlands House Hotel & Spa in Adare was eventually completed. The conditions and the course over the weekend were fabulous,” said Mr. Manton.

The late Castleisland native, Dick Fitzgerald’s memory was eventually honoured on a golf course in fields he knew as a boy.

It was a game of highs and lows as the scores swung from an early, seven point advantage to Na Gaeil to a half time score which saw Desmonds ladies lead by 2-7 to 3-1.

This lead was extended by the Castleisland girls by a further seven points but unfortunately the pendulum swung in favour of the Tralee girls from there to the end of the game.

Irish Cross Country Champion, Shona Heaslip, An Ríocht AC, Castleisland with Kerry O’Flaherty, Newcastle and District A.C. in second place and Ciara Mageean, U.C.D. A.C. in third place after Sunday’s Irish Life Health National Cross Country Championships at Abbotstown, Dublin.

Shona Heaslip of An Ríocht Athletic Club upset all pre race forecasts when racing to a sensational win in the Irish Life Health National Senior Cross Country Championships over 8km on the purpose built, cross-country course at Abbotstown in Dublin on Sunday.

To make it an even more memorable day for the club, 800 metre specialist Laura Crowe was an excellent fourth which sees the two An Ríocht women on the six strong Irish team for the European Cross Country Championships which will be held in Italy on December 11th.

Scale of Achievement

To underline the scale of the achievement it’s worth pointing out that the other three girls in the top five all represented Ireland at the recent Rio Olympics.
With great support running by Niamh O’Sullivan, Sharon Cahill, Suzanne Neilan, Mary O’Connor, Deirdre Enright and Catherine O’Sullivan, An Riocht won the bronze medals in the inter club section behind two powerful city clubs Dundrum South Dublin and Leevale.

Shona Shone in 5K Series

Locally, Tralee woman, Shona shone during the summer series of An Ríocht 5K races here in Castleisland and was sharing the top four spots in blistering paces with the best of the men.

“Shona, who won the U-23 title last year, has only been running seriously for a little over two years. She has now joined the elite of Irish athletes following this sensational win,” said the delighted An Ríocht AC manager, Kate McSweeney.

“Having progressed through the ranks very quickly her status is now very much that of a highly rated international athlete.

Coach and Mentor Niamh O’Sullivan

“Much of the credit for this must go to her coach and mentor Niamh O’Sullivan.
“Laura Crowe has been at the forefront of Irish track running winning national titles at 800m and 1500m but has moved up to the longer cross-country distances with ease and will relish the prospect of racing at the Europeans.

“All at Team Ríocht would like to wish the two girls the very best of luck,” said Ms. McSweeney.

Excellent Account in Irish Times

There’s an excellent account by Ian O’Riordan of Shona’s great win in yesterday’s Irish Times. If you can, at first, forgive and ignore the fact that they moved An Ríocht Athletic Club to Tralee, it’s a first rate report on the great win with the credits falling just where they ought to.

There’s also a telling action photograph, by Cody Glenn/Sportsfile, with the report showing Shona and Laura right up there with the race leaders.

This Saturday night, December 3rd the Kerry Ladies GAA Awards Dinner takes place in the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney from 8pm.

For three Castleisland Desmonds / Kerry players it will be a very special occasion.

Gemma Kearney will receive her U-14 Munster Championship medal which she won when Kerry defeated Cork, Limerick and Tipperary.

They were unlucky to lose to a very strong Kildare team in the All Ireland Final.

Labhaoise Walmsley and Kayla O’Connor will collect their Munster Championship and All Ireland Medals after a successful season playing with the Kerry U-16 team that defeated Dublin in the All Ireland Final by 20 points.

Kayla O’Connor played at wing back and she is still underage and will be a leading light again in 2017.

Labhaoise Walmsley will be collecting her third All Ireland inter-county medal. Playing this year at centre half forward for Kerry she had a fantastic season. She will now move up to the minor grade and will be hoping that more success comes her way in 2017.

Desmonds Juniors Fall to Ballydonoghue in Final

Desmonds Junior team finished their 2016 season on Sunday last when they played Ballydonoghue in the North Kerry intermediate cup final in Duagh.

Ballydonoghue started the game at a very fast and lively pace when they went into an early lead with scores from Stephen Foley, Padraig Lyons with Gerard Kisssane scoring four points from frees.

Immense Pressure

Desmonds backs were under immense pressure from the Ballydonoghue forwards. The scoreboard would have shown the North Kerry men further in front at half time only for some good defending by Shane Walsh, Neilus Lyons and David Lynch.

Desmonds, Steven Bartlett scored their first point of the half on the 21st minute with a free kick when Graham O’Connor was fouled. Stephen was to add two more scores from frees to see them go in at half time trailing on the score of 0-7 to 0-3 and you felt they were still in the game if only slightly.

Ballydonoghue started the second half straight away with a well taken point from their captain and midfielder Martin O’Mahony.

No Luck Near Goals

Desmonds at this stage were chasing the game but were having no luck in front of goals and this caused them to fall further behind with scores from Ballydonoghue’s Dermot O’Connor and Brian Mason.

Desmonds got their scores from the boot of Steven Bartlett with three points and Cian O’Connor added his name to the scoreboard with a point from play.

Then, Ballydonoghue scored their only goal from substitute Eric O’Connor late in the second half and the game looked well and truly over for the Desmonds.

But they still kept attacking and this was to see Desmonds substitute Chris Brosnan score their only goal in injury time.

Great Season for Desmonds

It was too late and with time running out, the Ballydonoghue team was crowned North Kerry Intermediate Cup Champions for 2016 on a score of 1-13 to 1-07.

Overall, it has been a great season for the Desmonds Junior team having reached three finals during the year winning one of them, great credit must go to all of the players and management of Edmund Hartnett, Colm O’Shea and Niall O’Connor.

Castleisland Desmonds GAA Club lotto takes place tonight, Saturday December 3rd in the Shoemaker’s Bar for a Jackpot of €2,400 Tickets on sale at €2 or three for €5.

A specially commissioned Christmas Tree shaped, event inscribed, souvenir medal will be presented to all participants and Christmas Hampers for the winners after this Sunday’s (December 4th) annual Run Rudolph Run 5k.

The off time is 11am and runners, joggers and walkers can register online at www.riocht.ie or on 066 71 42199 or at the desk at An Ríocht AC on the morning.

Medals for All

The club has been getting inquiries if walkers will get a medal if they complete the course. Anyone who registers and covers the course without the aid of a mechanically propelled vehicle will go home with a medal and the winners with Christmas hampers.

After a huge season of activity in the club, this is the final big race / run / jog / walk of the year in Castleisland and the seasonal medal has made it all the more desirable.

The Week That’s in It

One of Ireland’s greatest athletics heroes, Ronnie Delany won the 1500m gold medal in the Melbourne Olympics 60 years ago on Thursday of this week.

The relevance of that momentous occasion to a 5k at An Riocht AC in the morning is that Ronnie Delany was the official guest of honour on the day the track opened here in Castleisland in June 2000.

Ronnie Delany Gold at Melbourne Olympics

The following piece is from an Athletics Ireland release on another anniversary of that great event in 1956.

“Ronnie Delany was just 21 when he breasted the tape to win the Olympic 1500m gold medal in Melbourne on December 1, 1956, but he had already gained a maturity and confidence beyond his years.

Victory in that Olympic final was the realisation of a dream that was sown many years previously. The young Ronnie dabbled in many sports but he discovered his greatest talent was in athletics.

“I discovered that I had a great talent in my 18th year, when I broke two minutes for the half mile. I did this in a senior race and suddenly here I was, just a boy, beating men,” Delany recalls.

Villanova University beckoned and his athletics career took on a new dimension when Ronnie teamed up with the legendary coach, Jumbo Elliott. He had also received excellent coaching at Crusaders Athletic Club in Dublin where another coaching legend, the late Jack Sweeney was in residence.

But for Jumbo Elliott’s influence, Ronnie Delany might never have competed in the Olympic 1,500m as he had been essentially a half miler up to then.

“It was on Jumbo’s insistence that I ran a mile in Dublin in the summer of 1955,” he recalls. “I ran 4.05 on wet grass in College Park, and on returning to Villanova Jumbo began to groom me for the Olympic 1,500m.”

In Melbourne, Delany easily qualified for the 1500m final. The field was still bunched as they hit the bell and the final lap of the Olympic 1500m. A blanket could have covered the contenders at that point. Ronnie Delany was at the rear of the field but was not worried about his position. “My task was merely to stay in contact and to be very much in touch at the bell, “ he said. “I then planned to be a position to make the decisive break that would take me clear to the tape.”

With just 180 metres to run, Delany made his decisive move. His natural speed carried him clear to breast the tape in a new Olympic record of 3.41.2. When he crossed the finish line with arms outstretched.

In Melbourne in 1956, Ronnie Delany fulfilled his ultimate ambition. His Olympic victory remains one of the greatest of Irish sporting achievements.

Delany, whose brilliant athletics career included an unbroken string of 40 indoor victories and a several indoor world records, remains as unassuming but totally positive as he was on that famous day in 1956 under the Australian sky.

For the duration of this month, St. Mary’s U-16 girls’ basketball team members are organising a ‘Christmas Memory Tree’ at Nana Bea’s Cafe here in Castleisland.

The tree will be based there for the next month and over the holiday period with the help of a local business people, Shirley and Chris Higgins, their family and staff.

The Memory Tree is a way of commemorating the life of friends and loved ones especially at this time of year.

Deceased Loved Ones

It’s a wonderful way of having your deceased loved ones remain in all our thoughts during the Christmas period.

On this Thursday night December 8th Monsignor Dan O’Riordan will be on hand to bless the tree and officially launch it by  turning on the lights.

The Holy Sacrifice of Mass will be offered for those being commemorated on January 5th at 7pm in the Church of Saints Stephen and John.

Memory Tags for €5

Memory Tags will be available to purchase from as little as €5 from many local shops and from U-16 team members.

The name of your loved one can also be written into a special book which will be located with the tree.

This book will be presented on the altar at Mass in January. All proceeds will go towards the Kerry Hospice Foundation and the U-16 girl’s trip to the Tomas Sola International Basketball Tournament in Barcelona next spring.

The U-16 girls are traveling to Barcelona in April 2017 to play in the tournament along with joint coaches, Aoife Nolan and Conor Brosnan. A committee of parents and supporters have also compiled a calendar for 2017 as part of the fundraising drive.

First Overseas Competition

“It’s the first time any team from the club has gone overseas to compete. It’s a big step forward for both St. Mary’s and the girls themselves in terms of development and representing the club on an international level. We will be up against the elite clubs from many other top European basketball countries so it will be a great experience and one hopefully the girls will never forget,” said Conor Brosnan.

“This is an initiative to raise funds but we also wanted the idea to have sentimental value so, therefore we are also donating some of the proceeds to the Kerry Hospice Foundation as our chosen charity.

Palliative Care Team

“Everyone has been affected in one way or another with illnesses, so we believe this is something every family can relate to.

“The specialist Palliative Care team in University Hospital Kerry provides care and support to patients who are living with an advancing illness.

“There are more than 500 new cases of cancer in Kerry each year and the care that is provided to the patients is second to none so this our way of giving something back to this fantastic organisation.

“So please call into Nana Bea’s Cafe in Castleisland any time this month and in the run up to Christmas to support two very worthy causes and to remember your nearest and dearest who are no longer with us,” Conor concluded.

Cool, overcast but otherwise ideal conditions greeted the 145 runners of widely varying abilities at the starting line for the annual An Ríocht AC Run Rudolph Run 5K at Rice’s Height at 11am on Sunday morning.

There in the mix were the people who set out to win and the people who set out to complete the course. Both types set their watches at the start and stop them at the finish.

Both types got medals and their own kind of satisfaction from the same race over the same ground. Both are equally valued by the race organisers and there was as much applause, maybe more, for the last as there was for the first home.

No Difference

And there was no difference in the mince pies or the porter cake both types ate or in the tea or coffee they drank in the clubhouse afterwards.

A bit like the line from the song The Red Rose Cafe:  ‘all there were so happy to the there.’

And some slightly sad that a great year of camaraderie and effort and participation had come to an end.

Hectic Happy Weekend

But glad at the news that their efforts and participation was all going towards the resurfacing of the track in the new year.

The club members had just come through a hectic happy weekend with their Snowed In and they were all out in force again on Sunday morning looking after their valued, road pounding 5K club members and participants.

A truly festive, musical treat is in store for the Kingdom as preparations are well underway in Castle Island for the annual Con Houlihan Memorial Christmas Concert.

The event takes please on Saturday 17th December from 8pm with doors open at 7-30pm at the River Island Hotel in Castle Island and a host of special guests are lined up for the evening which is being held in association with Kerry County Council Community Support Fund.

Save By Booking Early

Tickets are €20 and should be purchased in advance as they’ll cost €25 on the night. Bookings from the River Island Hotel on: 066 71 42555 or by calling 087 68 70 581.

Headlining this year’s billing is the last remaining living member of The Dubliners, John Sheahan – fiddler, tin whistle player, composer and poet.

Sheahan and Houlihan made acquaintance in the early days of The Dubliners formation in O’Donoghue’s of Merrion Row and remained firm friends.

It was indeed Con who wrote the sleevenotes for their 25 Year Celebration Album and described the group as ‘leaves from different trees blown together by the wind that changed the world of music a generation ago.’

An Chúilfhionn for Con

Sheahan performed the traditional air An Chúilfhionn at Con’s funeral ceremony in August 2012, when he passed away at the age of 86.

Playing alongside Sheahan on the night is Ballyduff native, box player Danny O’Mahony.

No stranger and a great friend to Castle Island, Danny released his long awaited and critically acclaimed debut solo recording In Retrospect in 2011 and it was officially launched in Dublin by John Sheahan.

Danny presents and produces Trip to the Cottage which features Irish Traditional Music and Song on Radio Kerry every Monday night from 8-10pm.

Sheahan and O’Mahony collaborated for the first time at a Folk Festival in Norway in 2010. “We performed under the stage name The Cooley Blues along with Cyril O’Donoghue and Michael Howard.

Click on the Poster to enlarge and for event details.

Great Experience

“That was a great experience and since then, we have developed a great musical friendship and have performed together many times. Our most recent performance was Live in the Marquee  in Ballyduff last Summer.

“We had a fantastic weekend in Ballyduff over the August Bank Holiday weekend and John was the highlight. People travelled from far and wide to hear him and meet him.

“We’re delighted to have the Co. Clare singer and Bouzouki player Cyril O’Donoghue join us again in Castleisland for another memorable night,” said Danny.

Exciting Displays

The audience on the night can expect an exciting display of top class dancing from world champion step dancer Séamus Ó Flatharta from the Connemara Gaeltacht. Ó Flatharta is also an All-Ireland Sean Nós Singer and Harpist.

The Marino Waltz from the famed Bord na Móna ad is guaranteed to be performed on the night, along with some more of John’s exquisite compositions. He will also recite some poems from his debut collection Fiddle Dreams and is sure to share a comical tale or two of his days with The Dubliners and Con Houlihan.

Huge Rugby Fan

The late, great Con Houlihan was not only a huge rugby fan but he also played with the local club in The Crageens. He was renowned for his eloquent, descriptive powers which employed his vast literary knowledge to bring the most mundane of sports fixtures alive through his regular column in the Evening Press.

The Con Houlihan Memorial Weekend was first set up in 2013 to honour the memory and promote the legacy of the late Con Houlihan.

In September 2013 a Folk School and Seminar, a charity event which benefited local charities, a concert featuring the Munster Rugby Supporters Club Choir and local school Choirs and other acitvities were held in Castle Island RFC.

Currow Rugby Heroes

This was followed in 2015 by a concert in The Church of the Immaculate Conception Currow where the Dursley Male Voice Choir performed.

The concert was held in Currow to honour the rugby heroes of that parish. There was also a Hospice Ball held at the Rugby Club, a Golf Classic and a walk in Glanageenty Woods. As Con Houlihan was a renowned journalist and writer a creative writing competition has also been held each year in his honour.

This competition is confined to fifth and sixth class students from local schools and it provides them with a chance to showcase their creativity.
