What a great, armchair, spectator sport show-jumping became when television sets were a novelty here and elsewhere in Ireland.

It caught on right away as it had all the drama a horse and a man could muster. Now it has all the drama horses and men and women can muster.

Even in the days of the snowy, black and white sets it made an instant impression. Facing into massive jumps you might just about see the rider’s cap if the camera was at the landing side of the fence. Invariably there was an Irish team facing one from England and what more would you want.

Though it was there on the box in front of us – it remained a world away in our imaginations.

Castleisland Brothers

Now, a pair of brothers from Castleisland and their horses are pacing and prancing and facing the fences over the same courses where Harvey Smith and David Broom and Tommy Wade and Eddie Macken once plied their trade through various generations ago. Imagine that!

Young Dan Geaney has just put down a fantastic week at the Royal Dublin Society – the RDS – and earned seven rosettes altogether.

Dan won the 138cm RDS qualifier last Thursday and he qualified his two ponies, County Express and Ardtaggle Lady for the final which was held in the main arena on Friday morning.

Children on Horses

His brother, Jack came sixth in the 128cm competition on Wednesday and qualified his pony Boom Box for the final in the main arena on Friday evening.
Dan also rode in the Children on Horses Competition on Saturday and Sunday on his own horse Doon Alright. His team were runners up in team event on Saturday.

This week Dan is riding in Millstreet at the European Show Jumping Championships. There are three categories, Children on Horses, Juniors and Young Riders.

He is one of five members on the Children on Horses Irish Team, riding Coral du Corel very kindly loaned to him by Maura Counihan of Killerisk Stables in Tralee.

The Millstreet championships kicked off on Tuesday with the Children on Horses individual qualifier.

All Over Europe

Twenty eight teams from all over Europe are competing there with 99 competitors in the Children on Horses Class.

Dan rode a great clear round in a time of 80.54 seconds slotting him into 23rd place. The team event will be on today and the individual finals on Saturday.
The opening ceremony was a spectacular event on Tuesday night with all 28 teams parading through the town of Millstreet.
There was also other good news for Kerry from the Dublin Horse Show as Katie MacDonnell from Camp won the four year old class.

Seán Barrett’s Year of Cycling on an Upward Curve

A Great Year: Seán Barrett, iBike Cycling Club. ©Photograph: John Reidy

For cyclists the race of all races for the 2016 season was held in Kanturk recently. It was the National Youth Championships. Sean Barrett from Scartaglin, a member of Tralee Manor West I Bike Cycling Club, had a brilliant weekend of competition there.

He came third in the national TT championships bagging a national medal. He finished fourth in the road race in a sprint finish with just a tyre width between them  – and he finished in tenth place in the criterium.

Earlier this month, Sean travelled to Letterkenny, Co. Donegal over the August Bank Holiday weekend to take part in the Errigal Iinternational four stage, three day youth race.

Returned from England

He had just returned from England after competing in two races the week before. There, he finishing in a very impressive ninth overall. The Irish team, of which Sean is a member, took the team prize with only nine seconds to spare.

Just a couple short of 100 young riders took part in the U-14 races having travelled from all over Ireland the UK, the Isle of Man, Scotland and as far afield as Malta and South Africa.

The Errigal International Youth Tour is now without doubt not only a top cycling event for youths in Ireland and the UK but one of the top youth events in Europe with fast roads, sharp bends and steep climbs.

All in the Family

Much closer to home, Sean Barrett won the Kerry Road Race League, and took second in the county championship which was held recently in Cordal.

He also came first in the county TT league and he won the county TT championship which was held on Tuesday evening.

Just to keep it all in the family, Sean’s dad, Tom Barrett won the M50 category in the Kerry TT league and came first in the M50 in the Kerry Championship TT.

Seán has had a very successful 2016 racing season which included a stint of riding in France earlier this summer.

Cordal hosted Firies the preliminary round of the Fr. Galvin Cup, East Kerry Intermediate Championship on Saturday.

Report: Paddy Flynn. Photographs: CúlPix /Nora Fealey

Despite the wet and windy conditions, the match was played in a great sporting spirit with both teams making a strong bid to win.

Philip O’ Connor opened the Cordal account with a goal in the sixth minute. Firies quickly levelled the scores with three skillful points by Padraig de Brún, on the 9th, 10th and 13th minutes.

It was nip and tuck. Cordal pulled ahead with three unanswered points early in the second quarter. Brian Reidy, Michael Flynn – a lovely long distance point – and finally Philip O’Connor on the 18th minute.

Reduced the Margin

Firies reduced the margin to the minimum with Ed Kerrisk and Conal Murphy on target for the visitors.

Cordal dominated the play for much of the remainder of the half, and lead by two points courtesy of a John Mannix point on the 25th minute.

However, in the last kick of the half, a Firies free, ably taken by Ed Kerrisk, again reduced the gap to a single point. Half time score: Cordal 1-04 Firies 0-6.

The turning point of the game came early in the second half. The sides were level on the 38th. minute, after a scatter of points from Stephen Foley and Pádraig de Brún for Firies and Brian Reidy for Cordal.

Then Firies hit a purple patch, notching up 1-2 in a matter of minutes. The goal by Stephen Foley, with Ed Kerrisk and Conal Murphy pointing– Firies led 1-10 to 1-5, in the 14th minute.

Traded Points

Cordal had an uphill battle to regain control. The sides traded points Cordal’s Philip O’Connor and Mike Daly for Firies, when Firies sealed their victory with a goal from the boot of Mike Daly giving the visitors a considerable lead on 42 minutes.

Cordal, to their credit, continued to play with determination and were rewarded with a Brian Reidy point on the 23rd minute.

However, Firies defended well and kept Cordal from scoring again. Mike Daly finished Firies impressive run with a point in the 28th minute.

The final score was 2-12 for Firies to Cordal’s 1-07. Hard luck to Cordal who had a good first half but lost control during the second half.

Well done to Firies and to Mike Daly who was presented with the Man of the Match award, which amounted to a year’s membership for the Aquila Club, Gleneagle Hotel, by East Kerry Board Chairman, Johnny Brosnan. Referee: Tom Moriarty, Killarney Legion.

The Cordal team: Sean Óg Ó Ciardubháin, John Mannix, 0-1; Billy Cronin, Florence Griffin, Jack McAuliffe, Niall Ó Ciardubháin, Pádraig Brosnan, Brian Reidy, 0-3; Philip O’Connor, 1-2;  Gary O’Leary, Kieran O’ Donoghue, Michael Flynn, 0-1; Padraig O’Connell, Gearóid O’Leary, David O’ Leary.

Cordal/Scart Minors V Rathmore – East Kerry League

Cordal/Scart Minors played against Rathmore in Rathmore’s home grounds on Monday as part of the East Kerry League.

Eddie Horan started the game off with a point in the first minute. Both teams failed to score during the next fifteen minutes and both sides kicked costly wides. It wasn’t until the sixteenth minute when the second score of the match arrived for Cordal/Scart which was another point scored by Seán Horan. Two minutes later Rathmore’s Trevor Cremin provided their first point of the game.

Eddie Horan on Form Again

Eddie Horan was on form again in the 21st and 24th minutes scoring two more points for Cordal/Scart.

Rathmore’s Dan Murphy was the last scorer of the half, scoring a point in the 28th minute.

Half time left Cordal/Scart a tidy two point lead at 0-04 to Rathmore’s 0-02. Scores increased considerably in the second half.

Rathmore’s Dan Murphy started things off with a point in the second minute. Jack Flynn was quick to return the score for Cordal/Scart and kicked a point in the fourth minute. Eddie Horan made excellent use of a 45 kicking the ball just over the goalies head adding a goal to Cordal/Scart’s tally.

Cordal/Scart Sharp

Rathmore’s Darragh Rahilly was next and scored a point in the ninth minute. Cordal/Scart were sharp and Eddie Horan had the ball over the bar again in the eleventh minute.

Rathmore scored two points in the next few minutes but Eddie Horan would soon replicate. He scored a point from a free in the 18th minute and a point from play a minute later. Rathmore’s Darragh Rahilly secured a free in the 21st minute and scored a point.

Rathmore’s Donagh Fitzgerald scored the final point of the game in the 26th minute. The ref blew the whistle declaring full time.

‘I think we’ll do it alright this time’– James O’Donoghue

While his attention and thoughts may have been on accounts and savings and student loans here in Castleisland last week, Kerry star, James O’Donoghue was quietly confident about today’s big challenge.

The Kerry forward was greeted at the Castleisland AIB branch office by Ronan McAuliffe and manager Ger O’Connor and as many local fans of all ages as he could manage to meet during his visit.

One of the latest GAA stars on the ambassadorial / employee roll of the bank, O’Donoghue couldn’t avoid fielding anxious supporters’ questions about Kerry’s chances against an apparently invincible Dublin.

On the Verge of the Big Game

Even though the game was a week-and-a-half away from the time of his visit to Castleisland, the topic was as lively as if we were on the verge of the big game – as we are today.

“I think we’ll do it alright this time,” was the line most of the gathered fans are still clinging to as we head down the tunnel of anticipation and white knuckles that only a Kerry and Dublin game in Croke Park can generate.

The Holy Ground

Neg View A

His AIB colleagues in Castleisland will be behind him all the way today as he and his team-mates step onto the holy ground of Croke Park for the 3-30pm throw-in.

This is a do-or-die game for many of this generation of Kerry players and the management team.

James O’Donoghue’s new, young friends and admirers who encountered his friendliness and genuine warmth at the AIB student promotions day in Castleisland will also be part of the white knuckle fraternity this afternoon.

During a quick dial-around the county and beyond, I asked the following for their predictions of the score in today’s game: Poet and writer, Gabriel Fitzmaurice gave me a score of Kerry 2-11 Dublin 1-18.

Danny Healy Rae, TD, while predicting a Kerry win on a score of 2-17 to 2-16, said that he wanted to see the Kerry lads kicking the ball long and not get caught by carrying the ball and tiring themselves out.

“Don’t be passing the ball back and five feet to the next man. Kick the bleddy thing into the forwards and in around the square and then we’ll see a game of football as we knew it. I hope they win,” said Deputy Healy Rae.

Up for Grabs

Castleisland based FG Councillor Bobby O’Connell also goes for a two-point Kerry victory to the tune of:  2-11 to 2-9.

Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris is travelling up for the match and he feels that Kerry will take the game by two points. “I don’t know if the team in the papers this morning is the one that will start, but I think Kerry will do it on a score of 2-13 to 1-14.

Sligo based Kerry man and Fiddler supreme, Gerry Harrington wouldn’t be drawn on a score because he feels that he doesn’t know what the Kerry team is capable of. It’s up for grabs of course and it’s the All-Ireland final in many ways,” said Gerry without a hint of apology to the hordes of the hopeful in Mayo.

Gerard ‘Gerdie’ Murphy will be all out again in his ‘Kerry Suit’ in Dublin today. Even so, he wasn’t letting his heart rule his head when asked to predict a score.

“I’m afraid they’ll get the better of us again and I’d say it’ll end up at 1-15 to 2-14.

Newspaper Predictions

I don’t think I’ve seen or heard of a newspaper article by journalist or expert which gave Kerry a chance against the perceived might of the Dublin machine. They have been wrong before and on several occasions too.

I was listening to a panel of experts talking on RTÉ Radio One on Sunday evening after Mayo had beaten Tipperary in the other semi-final. Collectively, they wondered how Mayo would cope with Dublin in an All-Ireland final. And not as much as a how’s your father to Kerry and its supporters.

As the fate of our heroes is decided in Croke Park against The Dubs this afternoon, we’ll all cling, white knuckled and for as long as possible, to James O’Donoghue’s prediction: “I think we’ll do it alright this time.”

While there has been a massive domination of coverage on the senior game today, we must remember that our minor team in also involved in an All-Ireland semi-final. They take on Kildare in the game immediately before the Kerry V Dublin game. May God and every hop of every ball be with them.

The Kerry team: 1. Brian Kelly, Killarney Legion; 2. Shane Enright, Tarbert; 3. Mark Griffin, St Michaels/Foilmore; 4. Killian Young, Renard, (Captain); 5. Brian Ó Beaglaoich, An Ghaeltacht; 6. Peter Crowley, Laune Rangers; 7. Tadhg Morley, Templenoe; 8. Kieran Donaghy, Austin Stacks; 9. David Moran, Kerins O’Rahillys; 10. Paul Murphy, Rathmore; 11. Colm Cooper, Dr Crokes; 12. Now that the spring / summer schedules of events have run their course at An Ríocht Athletic Club, thoughts are firmly turning to those of the autumn / winter programme.

During the summer an innovative, off the couch and onto the road series of training evenings culminated in a Couch-to-3K road race and fun run. And it was great fun and ended in many of the first-timer participants feeling elated and with such a sense of achievement.

Their delight was shared and understood by the club and they were treated to a post event buffet in the club kitchen/dining area. The post event celebrations also came with a reminder that, now after that first step comes and equally big stride.

September Series of 5K Road Races

That is the step-up to the 5K level and training is ongoing now for the September series of road races / fun runs. Those new to this concept of fitness achievement have been provided with a five-week training schedule to help them up those steps.

The three-pronged, 3K to 5K series of races / fun runs will be held on successive weeks in September on: Wednesday 7th; Wednesday 14th and Wednesday 21st.

The regular 5K autumn / winter Couch-to-5K training schedule and series of road races / fun runs will recommence on Tuesday, September 13th. For more details call An Ríocht AC on: 066 71 42199 or email: kate@anriocht.ie

Christmas Family Festival / Snowed In

Then, a bit further down the chronological road at An Ríocht comes the Christmas Family Festival, Snowed In from Friday, December 2nd to Sunday, December 4th from 2pm each day.

“This one is for the children and the child at heart. After the astounding success of the Snowed In Family Festival at An Ríocht last year we are delighted to announce that Mr. and Mrs. Clause have set aside a weekend to stay right here with us.

“Make sure you get down to meet the gang and help them out as they prepare for Christmas. There will also be a wide range of markets to browse through and tick some gifts off the list. If you would like to take a stall please contact us on 066-7142199 as soon as possible,” said An Ríocht AC Manager, Kate McSweeney.

Mixed Fortunes for Kerry Teams

There was mixed fortunes for our Kerry teams on Sunday in Croke Park with our Seniors bowing out to reigning All Ireland champions Dublin.

Our minors reached the final with an excellent display against Kildare. Well done to all involved including our own Micheál Reidy and Tomas O’Connor . A special mention must also go to Fossa’s David Clifford who continued his excellent year with a man of the match performance. David’s mother Ellen is a native of Gortatlea while his uncle Tom O’Shea is a current selector with our senior team.

Ballymac GAA Club had two coach loads of mainly underage players present to support the Kerry teams on the day. Many thanks must go to Jeremiah Lynch for his organisation of this trip and all the trips during the year which gave our young players an opportunity to see the Kerry teams in action.

Narrow Win for Minors over Mitchells

Ballymac 2-14 John Mitchels 2-13
The Central Region competition continued with a home fixture against Mitchels. A close enough game with only a point between the sides at half time and again at full time.Despite being four points down with ten minutes left we managed to turn it around and win narrowly.Mitchels got two early points with Michael Hoare pointing for us. Eoin O’Malley won possession in midfield took a return pass from Keelan ,and soloed through for a fine individual goal. Dara Reagan pointed from a Liam O’Malley pass while Barry Lyons brought off a fine save for us. Mitchels then converted a penalty quickly followed by a point. Liam O’Malley was fouled and Reagan pointed the free ,Chris lowe put Dara Keane through for a point. The visitors again goaled followed by two points. Dara Reagan, Liam, ML Hoare and Dara Keane all pointed for us with Mitchels getting the final point of the half. Half time score Ballymac 1-8 Mitchels 2-6.

Mitchels pointed from the restart with Reagan and Keane pointing for us.Our opponents then got three points in a row with Reagan pointing from two frees after Liam and Josh were fouled.

Two more Mitchells points followed before Josh O’Keeffe got on the end of a Dara Reagan shot and flicked it to the net.Michael Hoare pointed with help from Liam O’Malley.

A vital interception by Eddie Rodgers put Keelan Brosnan on his way towards goal. When he was fouled Michael Hoare stepped up to convert the free and we had won another tight game. Tadhg Brick and Gary Horan worked hard in defence though there is room for improvement on this performance.
Team and Scorers: B Lyons, E Rodgers, G Horan, T Brick, J O Keeffe (1-0) E O Malley (1-0) M O Brien, L O Malley (0-1) M Hoare (0-4) C Lowe, K Brosnan, D Keane (0-3) D Reagan (0-6) Subs J McDonnell, D Chawke.

Ladies U14 North Kerry League Division 1 (Blue Team)
Due to a large panel of players Ballymac Girls U-14 has the pleasure in entering two teams in the North Kerry League. Having one team does not offer everyone sufficient game time and this way all players will see a lot of football. The Blue team competes in Division 1 and the Gold team competes in Division 3.
The Campaign for the Blue Team began Saturday 27th in Ballymac against County League Division 1 side Listowel at 12pm and Denis Sayers was the appointed Referee.
Ballymac got off to a great start winning the throw in and Cora Savage pointed from the exchange.
Ballymac hit a purple patch that never faded and went in at half time 1-16 to no score.  Management & Supporters were very happy and all instructions were taken on board.
The opportunity to empty the subs bench was taken Cora Savage was replaced due to a leg Injury but with seven points kicked at that stage she had more than earned the rest.
Ballymac went on to kick a further 3-4 to finish the game 4-20 to 1-02.
To give Listowel their credit they fought right to the end and later revealed they were missing one or two of their Panel.
Great praise must go to the defensive effort of the Ballymac backs who held out wave after wave of attack and produced some great counter attacking.
The whole performance was a team effort from one to eighteen so to single anyone out would be an injustice to the others.
Captain for the game was Caroline Hurley who gave a commanding performance between the sticks.
We wish Cora Savage a swift recovery and expect to see her back on the playing field very soon.
Team: Caroline Hurley, Sophie o’Donoghue, Roisin Long, Cait Rice, Emily O’Brien, Sinead McKeown, Eve Creedon, Caoimhe O’Carroll, Aisling O’Connell, Ellie McElligott, Cora Savage, Lisa Curran, Kate O’Connor, Emily O’Donoghue, Ellie Sugrue. Subs: Aoife Galvin for Sophie O’Donoghue, Mary Anne Fleming for Kate O’Connor & Holly Geary for Cora Savage.
Scorers: Cora Savage 0-07, Ellie McElligott 1-05, Emily O’Donoghue 2-04, Aisling O’Connell 0-02, Ellie Sugrue 0-01, Caoimhe O’Carroll 1-00, Lisa Curran 0-01.
Our gold team are out Monday 29th V Churchill @7pm Monday night and we wish them every success.

Commiserations to the Kerry Seniors

Commiserations to the Kerry senior panel who unfortunately bowed out of the championship despite an enormous effort against Dublin.

You all played your hearts out –you should be so proud of the way you represented yourselves, your clubs and your county. Tiocfaidh ár lá. Well done to the management team on their work with the team too.

Congratulations to the Kerry Minors

Well done to The Kerry minors on reaching the All Ireland Final after their comprehensive defeat of Kildare at the weekend. What a game to watch… The future of Kerry football certainly looks very bright with these young footballers. Great credit must go to their manager Peter Keane of Keane’s SuperValu, Killorglin and his backroom team of: Tommy Griffin, Chris Flannery and Padraig Murphy.

Our senior goal keeper, Cormac Leane is part of this group of promising footballers. Well done Cormac, your club is very proud of your achievements.

Close finish between Milltown/Castlemaine and Glenbeigh/Glencar

Milltown Castlemaine took on Glenbeigh Glencar in the O’ Sullivan Cup-in the Paddy Burke Memorial Park on Tuesday evening.

Playing in glorious sunshine, the first score came in the first minute with a point from Glenbeigh/ Glencar. It took Milltown Castlemaine until the fifth minute to score with a point from Gavin Horan. They quickly followed with two more from Cathal Moriarty and Eoin O’Brien. Despite some good play from GG, it was MC’s Gavin Horan who added the next score – his second point of the game. Jason McKenna added a point from play to give GG their second point after 15 minutes of play.

A Surging Run

The next passage of play saw Jonathan O’Sullivan point a free for MC to give them a three point lead.

GG’s Podge Griffin fielded the next kick out which lead to a point from Kieran Cahillane and Tommy Cahill added another straightaway to reduce the deficit to one point 0-5 to 0-4.

Caoilte Griffin made a surging run down the centre only to have the ball turned over by MC.

A cross-field ball by Jonathan O’Sullivan to Eoin O’Mahony ended in Eoin slotting it over with his right boot for MC’s sixth point.

The 23rd minute saw a great move by MC. This involved: Jeremiah Hayes, Pa Wrenn and Thady O’ Sullivan and culminated in a super goal from Cathal Moriarty. Score line was now 1-06 to 0-04. GG responded with a point from Tommy Cahill.

First Out of The Blocks

A pointed free from Jonathan O’Sullivan was to be the last score of the first half. Half time score: 1-07 to 0-05. MC introduced Craig Counihan for the injured Eoin O’Mahony at half time. The MC lads were first out of the blocks with a pointed free from Jonathan O’Sullivan for a foul on Craig Counihan.

MC was unfortunate when a quick turnover saw GG’s Kieran Courtney score a superb goal from a shot which gave Kevin Tangney no chance.

A counter attack by the home side saw Donal Dennehy kick a fantastic point off his left leg. This gave MC a four point advantage with the scoreboard reading: 1-09 to 1-05.

Our keeper was once again called on to pull off a brilliant save from Podge Griffin. MC turned over the ball and Thady O’Sullivan, Pa Wrenn and Jerome Flynn linked up.

A foul on Jerome resulted in another pointed free from Jonathan O’Sullivan. This was immediately cancelled when Shane Riordan and Jack Brosnan combined with Calvin Teahan for a super point for GG.

Disaster Struck

After 10 minutes of the second half, the scoreline stood at 1-10 to MC, 1-06 to GG. Both sides had a few turnovers and wides until GG were awarded a free and this was pointed by Tommy Cahill.

Disaster struck in the 46th minute when a quickly taken free by Tommy Cahill resulted in GG’s second goal excellently taken by Calvin Teahan. The sides were now level at 1-10 to 2-07. MC brought in fresh legs when Jerome Flynn made way for Kieran McKenna.

Donal Denney kicked another glorious point to put the home side ahead . This was followed shortly after by a pointed free from Jonathan O’ Sullivan, who was in superb form. GG added a point by Kieran Courtney despite the attentions of Tadhg McCarthy who was having a busy but brilliant game on the full back line.

A Clever Flick

With 12 minutes to go and only a point between the teams, excitement was mounting. In the 54th minute, substitute Kieran McKenna added MC’s second goal to the score sheet with a clever flick past GG keeper, Peter O’ Sullivan.

Could GG claw back a five-point deficit to keep themselves in the competition? Yes they could and, in less than a minute, a move between Shane Riordan and Tommy Cahill ended up with another goal for GG’s Kieran Courtney. Just a point between them now and four minutes remaining. Could MC hang on or could GG find another score?

Tommy Cahill obliged with a point in the 27th minute. The teams were level with three minutes remaining. The 28th minute saw further excitement with GG’s keeper having to pull off two magnificent saves from Cathal O’Connor. The looked certain goals but eventually went out for a 45. The next and final passage of play saw MC being awarded a free for a foul on Cathal Moriarty and this was slotted over by Jonathan O’Sullivan. Final Score: Milltown Castlemaine-2-13   Glenbeigh Glencar: 3-09. Well done to both teams for a superb effort.

Castleisland Desmonds GAA Club’s Junior men’s team brought another county title to Castleisland on Friday night by winning the Division 2 County League title by defeating Ballydonoghue in Finuge on a scoreline of: 3-14 to 2-14.

Report: Gerdie Murphy
Desmonds were in front at half time thanks to goals from the boots of Graham O’Connor and Tadgh Walsh. There were also some great scores from play from Seán Lynch and Cian O’Connor.

The impressive Graham O’Connor added two more points also from play and this was to see Desmonds go in at half time leading by 2-07 to 0-6.

Evergreen Defenders

The half time score was also helped by the great work of evergreen defenders, Neilus Lyons and Pierce Cronin. They turned back the clock to keep the Ballydonoghue forwards quiet throughout the opening half.
In the second half we saw the appearance of a different Ballydonoghue side. They now had a strong wind at their backs and they upped their game with a very impressive 1-06 from play. Now it looked like it was not going to be Desmonds night after all.

Impressive Captain

Stout defending by David Lynch, Mike Brosnan and the impressive captain, Gearoid Leonard added to the great, overall team work.

Desmonds midfielders, Joe Kearney and Brian Leonard were playing like it was an All-Ireland final. The game was on a knife-edge and with eight minutes left and the scores were locked at 2-10 to 1-13.

Some inspired substitutions by the team management resulted in scores from Shane O’Connell, Steven Bartlett and the O’Connor brothers, Cian and Graham. This patch settled Desmonds.

Well Worked Goal

Then, Luke Lyons playing from centre back scored a well worked goal from play to put this game beyone the reach of Ballydonoghue. This was in spite of them being awarded and scoring a penalty in as time ran out. Desmonds held out to win by three points.

Desmonds team and scorers: Kevin Moran, Pierce Cronin, Nelius Lyons, David Lynch, Mike Brosnan, Luke Lyons, 1-0; Gearoid Leonard, Captain; Brian Leonard, 0-2; Joe Kearney, 0-1; Seán Lynch, Steven Bartlett, 0-3; Tadgh Walsh, 1-0; Cian O’Connor, 0-2; Marc O’Connor, Graham O’Connor, 1-04; Subs: Shane O’Connell, 0-1; Danny Browne, John Kelly, Shane McLoughlin, Chris Brosnan and John Begley. It’s all about time – isn’t everything. I learned a thing or two from observing and listening to some of the 120 runners of both the serious and fun varieties last evening.

I learned because I used to think it was all about being first over the line. It is and it isn’t. It’s all about time.

It’s all about time. And that’s how they think. The fast ones finish first – as they do. Some go off and drink water and eat oranges and throw their legs from them while walking on the track. Others head off a couple of laps just to cool down.

Urge-on Friends

The less fast just finish, gather their breath, drink water and go back to the vicinity of the finish to urge on friends and maybe family members.

They know their friends and what they should be capable of. It’s all about time. With an eye on the clock and one on the track they begin to jump and clap and cheer as they will those still running over the line before the clock gets a chance to flash from one split second to the next. If it does – so what. If it doesn’t – that’s great. And there are hugs and kisses and pats on sweat soaked backs.

It was a strange kind of evening. The forecast promised nothing in terms of weather. It delivered a beautiful evening with a magical sky.

There was a bit of a headwind on parts of the course and it slowed some of the runners down. They would have done a better time if the evening was a bit calmer – they said. It’s all about time.

Lovely, Relaxed Atmosphere

They, and I bet a lot more of them, will do it all again on the coming Wednesday evening at 7pm. I know because I heard many of them saying things like: ‘I’ll see you here next week’ – or – ‘we’ll do a bit better next Wednesday’ or ‘I’d like to get in under the 30 the next night.’ It’s all about time.

There is a lovely, relaxed atmosphere about these events. Volunteers in the kitchen lash out tea and coffee and biscuits to runners and their friends and family and there’s a promise of a party after the third and final in the September series.

In the meantime, they’ll be back on Wednesday evening next, September 14th for another go at their personal best one more tilt at the clock. It’s all about time.

Wednesday evening’s results are as follows:

Pos Bib No. Name Category Time
1 113 Tommy O’Brien M40 16.27

High Standards of Football at Firies U-11 Tournament

Firies GAA Club pitch in Farranfore was a hive of activity on Saturday with the annual Jerry Foley Memorial Tournament taking place. The Ballymac team was placed in a group with Kilcummin, Legion, Spa and Rathmore.

The standard of football was very high and our lads gave their all in their games. But it was eventual finalists, Kilcummin and Rathmore that progressed.

Many thanks to Firies GAA Club for their invitation and also for the hospitality they provided on the day.

Seniors Draw with Scartaglin  Scartaglin 1-10   Ballymac 1-10

Our Senior Team played their final Co. League game of 2016 when they travelled to play Scartaglen on Sunday last.  The home side made better use of their early possession and led by 1 – 4 to 0 – 1 at the end of the first quarter T J Casey being the Ballymac scorer.  We came more into the game for the remainder of the half as both sides added 3 points to their total prior to the half time whistle.  Daniel O Shea 0 – 2 and Vinnie Horan 0 – 1 (F) adding to the Ballymac total to leave the half time score Scartaglen 1 – 7   Ballymac 0 – 4. Ballymac upped the gear in the second half and 3 points from Vinnie Horan 0 – 2 (F) saw the deficit reduce to 3 by the 40th minute.  However, Scart replied with 3 points of their own to extend their lead to 6 points with 10 minutes remaining and our prospects looked bleak.  However, a slip by the Scartaglen goalkeeper which saw him lose possession was capitalised upon by T  J Casey who slotted to the net gave us renewed hope and Ballymac were grateful to Vinnie Horan with three pointed frees in the time remaining to snatch a draw.

Team: P Laide, L. Dunne, M. Leen, D. Madden, G. Horan, C. Reynolds, D Long, M Herlihy, D O Shea, W. Casey. E. Reidy, S. Savage,  J. Scanlon, T. J. Casey, V. Horan, Subs : T Lyons, K. Lyons.

Overall it was a very successful Co. League campaign with the main aim of promotion to Division 3 achieved with a game to spare.  Also the playing of games throughout the summer was a big plus meaning an earlier finish compared to December finish in 2015.

Ballymac’s blue team Division one NKL v Chorcha Dhuibne
On Friday evening we travelled to Lispole to play our second group game v Chorcha Dhuibne. An early blow to Ballymac was the loss of on form centre back Sinead McKeown three minutes into the game, With Roisin Long our full back missing due to injury the odds were against us from the off. A stiff breeze in the first half made life very difficult and Chorcha Dhuibne made hay scoring 4:10 to a single point from Ballymac. We lost wing back Cathy Palmer to a stomach bug at half time. Disappointed with their lack of scores in the first half the girls soon got to grips with the match but in the end the gap was too far to bridge.  Ballymac’s notched up 1:09 in the second half and acquitted themselves fairly well given all the things they had to deal with, on another day the game could have been a whole lot closer. Scorers for Ballymac Cora Savage 0:3, Lisa Curran 0:03, Mary Ann Fleming 0:01, Ellie McElligott 1:0, Emily O’Donoghue 0:03.
Ballymac Team:  Caroline Hurley, Sophie O’Donoghue, Caoimhe O’Carroll, Cait Rice, Cathy Palmer, Sinead McKeown,Emily O’Brien,Aisling O’Connell,Eve Creedon, Cora Savage, Lisa Curran, Kate O’Connor ,Emily O’Donoghue, Ellie Sugrue, Subs: Aoife Galvin for Sinead McKeown, Holly Geary for Cathy Palmer, Mary Ann Fleming for Cait Rice.

Ballymac U-14 Ladies Gold Team Division 3 North Kerry League.
Our u14 Gold team had their first match on Monday evening .  Opponents were Churchill who are relative newcomers to the ladies ranks. Ballymac played a panel of 90% U13′s which was a welcome boost to those girls who hadn’t seen too much game time up until now due to the large u14 panel overall.  The match was over as a contest by half time. Ballymac took the opportunity to swap around the team and play players out of customary positions. To their credit Churchill had a panel of players who played right to the end. Final score was Ballymac’s 3-12 Churchill 0-06
Scorers: Ellie Sugrue 2:01, Holly Geary 1:01, Maryanne Fleming 0-02,Kate O’Connor 0-02, Emily O’Donoghue 0-04, Jade Riordan 0-01, Sinead McKeown 0-01.
On Sunday 4th we travelled to Kerins O’Rahilly’s for our second game. Playing the Kerins O’ Rahillys A Team was always going to be a tough ask for our young girls.
With the breeze in their favour Kerins O’Rahilly’s got off to a good start and had a commanding lead at half time.
In the second half the Ballymac girls came out of their shells a bit more and threw caution to the wind.
Although winning the game was always going to be a bridge too far, Ballymac, to their credit won a lot of loose 50/50 ball, Ballymac’s first score arrived from Kate O’Connor when she pounced for a goal in the 40th minute. Emily O’Donoghue converted a spot kick shortly after Kate O’Connor being brought down when she was through for a certain goal. In Goals Grainne Galvin gave the performance of the game thwarting the Kerins O’Rahilly attack time after time. Praise goes out to all of the girls who gave their all right to the end. Final score Kerins O’Rahillys 4-9 Ballymac 2-04.

Ballymac Team : Grainne Galvin, Millie Dunne, Sophie O’Donoghue, Christina O’Shea, Laura Dunne, Emily O’Brien, Aoife Galvin, Emily O’Donoghue, Alissa Leen, Mary Ann Fleming, Kate O’Connor, Holly Geary, Katie Enright, Ellie Sugrue & Captain Jade Riordan.

Cordal V Asdee – Round 11 Division 5 Senior Football County League

By: Paddy Flynn

God was definitely in control of the weather on Saturday as Cordal experienced all kinds of changes during their final County League match against Asdee. Cordal were determined after a crushing loss against Sneem/Derrynane in Round Ten of the County League.

The sun was out as the game begun but the scores were not as forthcoming. Strong easterly winds gave Cordal the upper hand in this half.

Numerous Wides Kicked

There were numerous wides kicked in the first ten minutes with Cordal missing three goal chances.

T.J O’Connor kicked off the scoring side of the game in the tenth minute with a point for the Cordal. Asdee were now off the mark as well and quickly retaliated with M. Breen scoring a point in the twelfth minute.

Seconds later Philip O’Connor scored a point for Cordal. Asdee scored next with E. Kennedy pointing the way in the 14th minute.

Philip O’Connor was quick again to match and scored two points in the 16th and 17th minutes. Cordal held a strong lead after Michael Flynn scored a great goal in the 18th minute. Asdee fought back though with E. Tydings booting a point over the bar in the 19th minute.

Cordal Kept Control

Cordal kept control in the next few minutes with Jason Cronin scoring a goal in the 22nd minute and Michael Flynn scoring a point a minute later.

E. Tydings scored a point for Asdee in the 26th minute and M. Breen scored another in the 29th minute.

Cordal showed they were in control in the 29th minute when Pa Naughton scored Cordal’s second goal of the game. Philip O’Connor ended the half with a point in the 30th minute. Half time left Cordal with a seven point lead at 2-07 to Asdee’s six points.

The second half was not to bring as good a performance by Cordal. The weather had also taken a turn for the worse and Asdee now had the advantage with winds in their favour.

Cordal only managed to score two further points in the half due to Asdee’s strong defending.

Asdee Redeemed

Kieran O’Donoghue scored for Cordal in the tenth minute and Micheál Cahill scored the last point of the game. Asdee redeemed themselves in the course of the half with D. Keane scoring two early points. M. O’Hanlon, E. Tydings, J. Doran and M. Breen also added to Asdee’s tally.

A goal scored by E. Tydings in the 30th minute equalised the match. J. Doran scored a point in the 31st minute for Asdee giving them the lead but it was Micheál Cahill’s final point of the game with only seconds left that saved Cordal from defeat and the game ended a draw.

Full time left Cordal at 2-09 to Asdee’s 1-12. Well done to both teams on a great match. Cordal will play Currow next as part of the O’Donoghue Cup.

Cordal Team: 1. Sean Óg Ó ‘Ciardubhain; 2. Florence Griffin; 3. Pádraig Brosnan; 4. Billy Cronin;

Cordal/Scart Minors to Face Currow in East Kerry Division 2 League Final

Paddy Flynn, Cordal GAA Club Pro. ©

Cordal/Scart put on a fantastic display of football on Sunday as they played Spa in a fight to earn a spot in the Division 2 East Kerry League Final.

By Paddy Flynn

The game took place in Spa pitch and kicked off at 2pm under wet and windy conditions. It was Spa who went on the attack first. This proved successful with a early point scored by Niall McCarthy. Shay Walsh was first out the gate for Cordal/Scart and he scored a point in the first minute.

Spa scored three more points in the next few minutes. David Spillane scored a point in the second minute, followed by a point from Niall McCarthy in the fifth minute and Gary Vaughan scored a point from a 45 soon after.

Fantastic Finesse

Cordal/Scart had enough of Spa holding the lead and in the next few minutes completely took over the game with fantastic finesse.

Jason Cronin began the Cordal/Scart campaign with a motivating goal in the sixth minute. This inspired Eddie Horan to do the same two minutes later and, barely a minute after, Jason Cronin repeated the process scoring his second goal of the game.

If three goals weren’t enough, Kieran Enright made sure to let Spa know what they were up against and scored a forth goal for Cordal/Scart in the tenth minute.

The Spa boys were under fierce pressure now and after a final point scored by Niall McCarthy in the 12th minute they were on the defensive for the rest of the half.

Cordal/Scart spent the rest of the half clocking up more points to maintain their dominating lead.

Fouls by Spa

T.J O’Connor scored a point for Cordal/Scart in the 15th minute. This was followed up by a point from a free scored by Shay Walsh. Fouls by Spa would help Cordal/Scart again and Eddie Horan was next to score a point from a free in the 20th minute. Another free for Shay Walsh led to another point in the 22nd minute and five minutes later Shay would have the ball over the Spa bar again.

Thirty minutes gone, the referee blew the whistle leaving two very contrasting half time scores. Cordal/Scart held a very strong thirteen point lead with 4-06 to Spa’s 0-05. Cordal/Scart came back in the second half ready to face Spa who were going to give everything they had to turn the tables.
